RESUMEN DEL LIBRO: Belli Dura Despicio is the Latin motto of HMS Warspite, and it translates as : I despise the hardships of war. If ever a vessel earned respect and admiration for her wartime exploits and powers of endurance, then surely it was Warspite, the most famous British battlecruiser of her era. The five vessels of Queen Elizabeth class to which the Warspite belonged were heavily armoured battleships carrying eight 15in guns and a secondary armament of sixteen 6in guns. At the time of the ships' launch, these mighty weapons were more destructive than anything carried by rival navies; each gigantic gun was 54ft long, weighed 100 tons, and was capable of hurling a 1920lb shell to an extreme range of 23,734 yards or nearly 12 nautical miles. Launched in 1913 and commissioned into service with the Grand Fleet in 1915, the ship served with distinction for the next thirty years, throughout two world wars, before being paid off and subsequently scrapped in 1945. At the Battle of Jutland, Warspite was hit no fewer than 29 times by enemy shell - fire, but continued to stay afloat and fight. During the Second World War she served in the Atlantic, English Channel, North Sea, Bay of Biscay, Mediterranean and on the Malta convoy route. She was present in Calabria, almost single handed seizing control of the Mediterranean from the Italians, and a Cape Matapan, Crete, Libya, Normandy, North Africa, Salerno, Sicily and Walcheren. At Narvik she helped to sink eight German destroyers. In this book V.E. Tarrant, provides a fascinating history of the splendid ship and her valiant crews. He has made use previously unpublished archive material and has had the generous co - operation of the Warspite Association, thus enabling him to present the fullest and most atmospheric account to date of a remarkable fighting ship.
