Overall, the entries can be divided into two broad categories. The first consists of events of obvious, intrinsec significance. Those in this categorie include: Battles, landings and campaigns. The capture or destruction of major enemy warships. The loss of important American naval vessels in war and peace, particularly or former. Explorations and expeditions. The introduction of new ship types. Technological firsts.
In the second category are events, relatively minor in themselves, chose as examples of operation typical of their period. To facilitate ease of reference, key entries have been given titles set in bold - faced type.
